As you plan for next year’s curriculum, we offer you SEWING PLUS,
an integrated learning program that will enhance and support your
current curriculum and help meet state standards. As teachers, Mrs.
Linn, and I have been perfecting two pilot programs over the last
three years for 4th and 5th grade students. Our hands-on, practical
program is designed to teach students skills they need to know and
show them how to use that information in the real world.
The
Quilting program focuses on Washington state, or US history, using
a combination of skills including math, measurement, writing, design,
hand sewing, art/color theory, and a bit of patience to make individual
quilt blocks. These blocks are then put together to create a beautiful
class quilt.
The Pillow program focuses on economics using skills such as making
change, measurement, machine sewing and writing. Students start a
small partnership-type business by making pillows. They apply for
a business license, design & sew pillows, and then study and create
commercials for an engaging mock sale.
The finished projects can also make great school fundraisers, or they
can be donated to the school as a memento.
Children want, and need, to ‘do’ things with their hands. Our integrated
learning program helps students see the value and necessity for practical
skills such as Math, History, Teamwork, Planning, Research, Critical
Thinking, and more. They also earn self esteem, learn how things go
together, have a sense of accomplishment, and get a small taste of
what the real world is all about.
